Legionella Compliance & Energy Conservation
Bacteriological safety and control measures for Large facility hot and cold water services networks.
Aqualyse SMX E-series industrial-size copper-silver ion generator for systemic control and prevention of Legionella bacteria colonization in large facility potable water distribution network systems.
Aqualyse SMX E-series industrial-size copper-silver ionization technology is a fully automated and powerful management system having a 0 to 180 VDC output @ 15 to 20 amps. Standard features include digital and analog input/output controls, communication protocols, data logging, and managing the variable power flow applied to the interconnected sacrificial electrodes found inside the stainless steel ICX ion chamber cell(s) to maintain a constant inter-electrode current.
These ionization chamber cells also known as flow cells, are installed in bypass to a water supply line or domestic hot water loop depending on the application. The electrodes are composed of a medical grade copper and silver alloy with CuAg concentration levels that vary from 90%Cu/10%Ag to 70%Cu/30%Ag depending on each unit’s application. Eight electrodes are found in each ionization chamber cell for a total weight of 22.5 lbs. per cell. Each AquaLyse system is chosen based on the calculated GPD (Gallons Per Day) for each facility and the location where the units will be utilized.

The Process:
The AquaLyse SMX industrial ion generators release precise and safe concentrations of ionic copper/silver into water systems (classified as open loop systems) at minimum active concentrations of 0.4ppm-Cu+2 and 0.04ppm-Ag+. These positively charged ions travel within the water system and penetrate the biofilm to bind themselves with negatively charged microorganisms like Legionella. Once in contact with these microorganisms, the copper/silver ions attack in a multiphase process to disrupt the overall cell metabolism causing cellular lysis (death). Safe ionic concentration levels are maintained by monitoring the water system and thus offer additional long-term residual protection.
AquaLyse industrial-size copper-silver ionization technology complements facility owner/operator’s obligations to control and prevent bacterial contamination within domestic potable water systems and minimize facility/building occupants’ exposure risks associated with waterborne microorganisms such as Legionella pneumophila (cause of Legionnaires’ disease), Anthrax, Listeria, E. Coli, salmonella, M. Avium, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas and many more.
Facility incoming domestic water supply lines and/or reservoirs can be 100% treated for systemic protection and compliance with international best practices e.g. ASHRAE 188 Legionella prevention standard – Protecting facility occupants from Legionella infections.
The AquaLyse technology integration would also allow facility operators to safely lower their water temperature below 60°C (140°F) without running the risks of Legionella growth. This feature translates into an average of 5% in energy savings for every 12°C (10°F) in water temperature drop.
Additionally, this approach will drastically minimize the risks of scalding without the traditional required use of mixing valves.
The AquaLyse systemic water treatment which includes the entire domestic hot water network, distal points, low-flow areas and dead-legs, is a must for long-term Legionella control and prevention. AquaLyse industrial-size copper-silver ionization can offer a safe, corrosion-free and scalding-free solution with low maintenance costs and residual biocide properties that also treat the biofilm.
With over 50 different AquaLyse models to choose from, this industrial technology is the most advanced, affordable and reliable solution for domestic water treatment on the market today.
